It is pure alchemy and magic. Wow. Just off the the top of my head, I streamed a 72' Paris show yesterday and honestly it was pretty F . why complain? so where does a guy who is mediocre at best on finding music online go to get back what he loves the most? This is not my favorite Dead show, nor is 1997 my favorite year, it's actually 5th or 6th after 73/74/70/69 and probably after a lot of stuff from 1968 and 71. The Audio Files are all still there on the Archive servers. If I was stranded on an island, I would bring this version of eyes. I think this has got to be in my top 5 shows. On the other hand you can practically sing to it, as it is so lyrical. It was merely a preview of what was to come.We were sitting stage left just slighly above the band,so we could hear the drums&lifiers before being pumped through the sound system. but this is far beyond my expectations, this is fantastic in all aspects . I can not tell you how many dead shows and song variations ultimately get compared to this show when I listen to them. he only had the second set. I heard some other critic claim that barton hall's minglewood is the best but i have to disagree Another great show of 77 is Swing Auditorium at San Bernadino, CA and that minglewood i believe is one of the best u will ever hear. To each his own, I just get tired of hearing about 5/8/77 being the greatest GD show ever, spare me the overkill. Just to trash on other people? Unbelievable. Limited Flag . I love it for the guitar solo in Brown Eyed Women, and for the power of the NFA. The 2nd Set features the collection of tunes that really showcase where the Dead were at with their collective jamming mind in 1977 - Terrapin>Playin and Uncle John. . Bob's voice is so strong on Jack Straw and Saturday night. This matrix recording captures a deservedly legendary show. Sounds pretty darn good to me. So the verdict, to me, has to be Highest Rating/5 Stars - not just for this specific show (there are a few imperfections, as if that ever mattered at a Dead show!) but definitely a terrific listen and a prime example of the dead at their finest. In addition, the Loser is nothing short of spectacular. not the best show the dead ever did, While it is of my opinion that, while this is not one of the greatest shows of all time, it is a must listen. . On a final note, I have several friends who were fortunate enough to have actually attended this show. when i first heard this show it was a good gen cassette from Mike B. in conn. and wow i was floored. In my fairly substantial experience listening to bootlegs and going to Grateful Dead concerts (65 shows before Jerry kicked it, from '81 - '94), I've found that when Phil (the bassist, for you non-Heads out there) is playing well, the band plays well, and conversely. Jerry's hittin' on all cylinders most of the show; especially dug his Estim. I loved it ever since although every quality tape of the show always had some part cut, I guess from the fact that you could not always get a set on a standard 90 minute cassette. which prompted me to check the calendar of 1977. I'd just like to say that we should all be celebrating the fact that this music is being revistited by people of all ages, and all tastes - enforcing the fact that bands like the grateful dead and the allman brothers are going to be timeless. Cornell looms large for the weary Deadhead, sometimes irritatingly so, like someone you love dearly but whose reputation precedes them. In the old days, it seemed like Good quality GD tapes were all about power, you needed to know the right people to get the good tapes. I downloaded the last "best" version of this here. I'll admit, I wasn't a big fan of their late 70's studio work in my early unexpirenced days as a Dead Head, but after hearing Dancin' I sought out all their live material from '77. That said, this is a really great show, though not my personal favorite. This was my 2nd Deadshow after one in NYC and I was 17. i won't argue with that. I'm hooked now Ok now that it's stream-able only, we need GD Merchandising to move this show to Dick's Picks. Again no lighting speed like Duane, but Jerry wastes not a note. Its a 'reference' show for the Dead. It may not be the best or your personal favorite, but its the reference against which many a show is judged.
